What are peer support groups?

Peer support groups are groups filled with people trying to overcome a substance use disorder. These groups allow you to meet, share, and learn from people with similar experiences.

Magnolia Medical Group has peer support groups led by a peer recovery coach. These groups are open to all patients of the clinic at any stage of their recovery process.

The team at Magnolia Medical Group treats many substance use disorders, including:

  • Opioid addiction
  • Alcohol addiction
  • Meth addiction
  • Benzodiazepine addiction
  • Heroin addiction
  • Fentanyl addiction

Peer support groups at Magnolia Medical Group allow you to support each other through recovery through lived experiences and mutual understanding.

I’m a loner. How can peer support groups help me?

The peer recovery coaches at Magnolia Medical Group believe connection is the opposite of addiction. Peer support groups allow you to meet people with experiences and feelings similar to yours, giving you an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships so you’re not so alone.

Peer support groups are also a good place to practice communication and social skills in a safe and nonjudgmental environment.

Meeting with your peers can teach you recovery strategies that work for others, and your own experiences might benefit someone else. Peer support groups also reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders, making it easier for you to talk openly about your addiction.

What can I expect during peer support group meetings?

Peer support groups at Magnolia Medical Group are safe, nonjudgmental meetings where you can learn and grow while participating in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and addiction therapy.

Peer support group meetings are presented in an open conversational format, giving individuals the space and time to share their perspectives and shed new light on the different topics.

These group meetings allow you to work through struggles and celebrate recovery milestones and wins.

Magnolia Medical Group also has a women’s recovery group focusing on self-care and relapse prevention. The women’s recovery group is a 14-week program. The team encourages participants to attend each session, but it’s not mandatory.
