Peer Support Specialists help bridge the gap that can sometimes exist in formal and informal treatment for those with Substance Use Disorder by focusing on recovery first.
Peer Support
What a Peer Support Specialist does:
A Peer Support Specialist, often referred to as a “Peer,” is an occupational title for a person who has personal experience with a mental health and/or substance use problem and with recovery from that problem, is willing to talk about their experience to help others trying to recover from these or similar problems.
Peer Support Specialists help bridge the gap that can sometimes exist in formal and informal treatment for those with Substance Use Disorder by focusing on recovery first and by helping to rebuild and redefine the individual’s community and life. By keeping recovery first, they can meet individuals where they are in the recovery process and help them along in their recovery journey.
Studies done by the Recovery Research Institute have evaluated the effectiveness of peer recovery support for those with Substance Use Disorder and found that Peer Support:
1. Improves relationships with providers and social supports.
2. Reduces the rate of relapse.
3. Increases satisfaction with the overall treatment.
4. Increases treatment retention.
