Addiction recovery is a delicate process that requires a lot of attention. If you are or know someone in the addiction recovery process, then it’s important to get familiar with intensive outpatient programs (IOP).

IOP is a very effective recovery method, producing many positive results. In this post, we will explore IOP in detail. But, first, let’s discuss what IOP is and dive into the components and benefits of this program.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An IOP is an effective method of treating substance use disorder. This method involves patients visiting a treatment center frequently, usually several days a week for just a few hours daily.

Most IOPs last for about 90 days, and a drug test is carried out during the program. Patients usually meet on a schedule with the treatment center in the morning or evening. IOPs are usually carried out in groups but sometimes done in private sessions, depending on the logistics of the case.

What Is the Difference Between Outpatient Programs and Intensive Outpatient Programs?

The intensive nature of the latter is its distinguishing factor. In outpatient programs, patients do not live in the facility. Instead, they visit the center, get the treatment, therapy, or whatever session they need, and return to their homes.

Our functional outpatient programs are suitable for patients with less severe cases. However, patients struggling with the addiction recovery process can utilize these intensive outpatient programs. The intensive outpatient programs require about 9 hours of daily treatment five days a week.

What Is the Difference Between an Intensive Outpatient and an Inpatient?

Inpatients live in the facility and spend nights there. Intensive outpatients will visit the facility for the session and then return home.

There are two types of intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization and day treatment. Partial hospitalization is a less intense program where people come in twice a week for up to 12 hours per day, while day treatment is one or two sessions per day that can last up to five hours at a time. Some facilities provide various levels of care for those with mental illness. These range from supportive housing units to crisis stabilization units.

The number of beds in each type of housing varies from institution to institution but generally ranges from 10-100 patients on any given day.

Main Components of IOP Treatments

IOPs are usually done in group therapy because groups are usually faster for recovery as people can meet others in a similar situation.

Patients in groups can support each other, share accountability, learn how to socialize without using drugs or drinks, communicate effectively, and reintegrate into daily routines.

What Do You Do at the IOP Level of Care?

In an IOP, you learn to have fun without drugs and alcohol. Substance abuse can be draining and affect all aspects of your life.

Some areas of your life that substance abuse can affect include;

  • Mental health
  • Family Health
  • Career health
  • Social interactions

When you attend an IOP, you will likely attend therapy, support one another in the group, and study relevant courses.

To provide a flexible solution for all patients, there are virtual IOPs. This idea was born post-COVID-19 pandemic and has been in place since then. The virtual experience is almost like a physical experience. You have the same schedule, meet with your teacher, and receive treatment.

Effective Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Several factors can make you consider enrolling in an intensive outpatient program. For instance, if you are looking for an alternative to an inpatient program that is less invasive to daily life, IOP is an excellent strategy.

Also, if you are looking for something more intense than your usual outpatient program, then an IOP could be a great option.
